For lube I use water with a little dish soap in it. Because of the fine cut of the films I use a secondary bevel and only do the edge. I use the Veritas original guide which has an eccentric to boost the angle by small increments, so it is easy for me.Steve Dnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5558140907776072543.post-45950686244671775662017-03-06T14:17:14.421+01:002017-03-06T14:17:14.421+01:00You're a sharp observer, Steve. As you point out, the edges of the bevel was slightly rounded, this had happened because i had "glued" the 3M sheets taking advantage from the suction effect given by, i suppose, the simple surface tension of the water. It was the first time I used the 3M sheets with the polyester support and wanted to try this peculiarity to keep them firmly about which I had heard.
Normally I used sandpaper with paper support glued with spray glue and I never had the problem of rounding.
Now I use cheap Japanese Waterstones, but I would switch to diamond stones and strop.Andreahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11238064480032889083noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5558140907776072543.post-31013535469082691292017-03-06T03:45:20.151+01:002017-03-06T03:45:20.151+01:00Hi Andrea, you are definitely sharp judging by the...Hi Andrea, you are definitely sharp judging by the shavings, but the photos show the the face of the blade is getting rounded from the film not being glued to the plate. The photo on the grey film where there are reflections all around the edge show this.

I have bought pressure sensitive adhesive backed films and place them all around a granite tile so I can flatten the backs or sharpen. The super fine films remove very little material so if the edge is rounded you may have trouble with small microbevel angles not reaching the edge.

You clearly are getting good results but if you decide that quickly getting a burr is difficult, then the adhesive should help.

I have gone back to stones but I still use the crazy sharp for final honing down to .5 micron. I find that the film doesn't compete with either india or diamond for heavy material removal.

Best Regards
SteveSteve Dnoreply@blogger.com
