How to make a pair of dividers or compasses or both

Tell me the truth, you've always wanted to build a compass but you were afraid to ask how to do it, that's right?
No? Well, it doesn'n matter, here's anyway how you could do it...
I stole the idea here.

Ditemi la verità, avete sempre desiderato costruirvi un compasso ma non avete mai osato chiedere come fare, giusto?
No? Vabeh, non fa niente, ecco comunque come potreste fare...

Take a pencil, a big and long nail or a rod with a similar diameter, a bolt wider than the pencil, an iron bar wider than the bolt and another piece of iron wider than the bar.

Prendete una matita, un chiodo grosso e lungo o un tondino con diametro simile, un bullone più largo della matita, una barra di ferro più larga del bullone e un altro pezzo di ferro più largo della barra.

The pivot.
Drill a hole in the shank of the bolt with a diameter just above the diameter of the pencil, near the threaded part (a center punch and a drill press will help you).

Il perno.
Forate il codolo del bullone con una punta di diametro appena superiore al diametro della matita, vicino alla parte filettata (un bulino e un trapano a colonna vi saranno d'aiuto).

Cut the piece of the bolt that contains the hole and some thread and then round off its ends (an angle grinder and a power drill will come in handy).

Tagliate il pezzo del bullone che contiene il foro e qualche filetto e poi arrotondatene le estremità (un flessibile e un trapano vi saranno d'aiuto).

The leg.
Now drill a hole with the same diameter of the bolt near one end of the bar (the center punch and the drill press have become your friends).

Ora praticate un foro dello stesso diametro del bullone vicino ad una estremità della barra (il bulino e il trapano a colonna vi sono divetati amici).

Cut a piece of the bar, less longher then the pencil and shape to a spear point the end opposite the to the hole (the angle grinder have become your friends too).

Tagliate un pezzo della barra più corto della matita e sagomate a punta di lancia l'estremità opposta al foro (anche il flessibile vi è diventato amico).

The knob.
Take the last flat piece, bore and thread it so that it can be screwed by the bolt, round it with your friends drill and grindstone, and knurl it with a cold chisel.

La ghiera. 
Prendete l'ultimo pezzo, foratelo e filettatelo in modo che si avviti il bullone, arrotondatelo con i vostri amici trapano e mola, e zigrinatelo con uno scalpello per metalli.

Now it's time to assemble everything including, if you have it, a wave spring washer between the ring and the flat leg

Ora è tempo di assemblare tutto includendo, se l'avete, una rondella elastica ondulata tra la ghiera e la gamba piatta.

And TA-DA! The drawing compass is ready.

E TA-DA! Il compasso per disegnare è pronto.

Then cut the head to the big and long nail or make the tip to the rod, insert it in place of the pencil and... TA-DA! The dividers is ready too.

Poi tagliate la testa al grosso e lungo chiodo o fate la punta al tondino, inseritelo al posto della matita e... TA-DA! Anche il compasso per le suddivisioni è pronto.

Last week I went to the local blacksmith and I could not resist asking him to make me a pair of dividers that are dead ringers for the dividers shown in Leonardo da Vinci's Manuscript H, stored at the Institut de France, Paris.

Il compasso è stupendo. Il movimento è morbido, ma sufficientemente fermo. Se si allenta con l'uso, può essere serrato colpendo il rivetto in alto con un'incudine mentre il compasso è appoggiato su un martello con una faccia piatta.

Or striking the rivet with a stone with the dividers resting on the side of a ductile iron plane. Do not worry about the plane because the dictile iron is indestructible and unbreakable, but avoid using precious stones.

Oppure colpendo il rivetto con una pietra mentre il compasso è appoggiato sul fianco di una pialla di ghisa sferoidale. Non preoccupatevi per la pialla perchè la ghisa sferoidale è indistruttibile e infrangibile, ma evitate di usare pietre preziose.

Comunque, se siete a corto di denaro e non potete permettervi un compasso a questo prezzo ridicolo, penso che la soluzione migliore sia di costruirvelo da soli. Ed ecco che arriva una buona notizia, il fabbro vende questi compassi anche come un kit per 115 Dollari (istruzioni incluse): risparmiate 10 Dollari, potete costruirvelo della lunghezza desiderata e vi divertirete un sacco.

The local blacksmith also showed me a prototype of a new furniture hardware he is working on. They are nails, ready to use out of the box, and with the tip prelapped up to 6000 grit.

Il prezzo stimato è di 15 Dollari ciascuno. Sembrano costosi, ma una volta che li avrete lucidati sulla coramella, penetreranno nel legno come un coltello caldo nel lardo di montone o come un chiodo nel legno preforato.

Se, nonostante la lucidatura, troverete ancora difficoltà a piantarli nel legno, vi consiglio di strofinarne il gambo con del lardo di montone oppure di preforare un foro pilota nel legno o, al limite, di sostituire nel vostro progetto, il legno con del lardo di montone preforato.
